As a premier national-level institution, it pursues empirical research on problems of development, development policy, planning and social change. The major goals of the institute include research and training in economics and allied subjects, to establish a fruitful exchange with distinguished scholars and learned bodies in India and abroad, to promote co-operative research within its own faculty and collaborative research with other institutions in India and abroad. It organises training courses and holds seminars for the benefit of the social science community and the development community
