About

Art and culture, Child Labour, Child welfare, Community Development, Development(General), Education, Employment, Poverty, Rural Development In 1996, Indraani Singh founded Literacy India, a non-profit, charitable organization. In doing so, she gave many slum and street children freedom from begging, forced labour and exploitation. From its first beginnings in Gurgaon, Haryana, Literacy India has come a long way. It provides basic education, learning through theatre, and serves a basic meal to the children while they are school. Its aim is to ensure the children are brought up to a standard where they can effortlessly join mainstream schools ? both public and government. The teams at Literacy India have a three pronged strategy: 1. Awareness ?(Jagrukta) 2. Shiksaarth (Theatre in education workshops 3. Pathshala (open school) They have a non-formal school ? Vidyapeeth and offer vocational training in the `Karigar? module. Nearly 170 children benefit from Literacy India?s programmes
